To: United Nations
Excellency Ban Ki-moon Secretary-General United Nations New York, New York Your Excellency, For several millenniums many nations have celebrated the first day of spring as their new year. Today, nearly 300 million people around the world celebrate the first day of spring as their new year, better known as Norouz (New Day). Nearly all of these celebrants live in UN member nations. Unfortunately, none of the UN calendars or affiliated agencies commemorate this important date as has been done for different celebrations of member nations. We, the undersigned, request from your Excellency, bearer of the highest office of the United Nations, to kindly authorize the relevant agencies to correct this oversight for the upcoming calendars throughout the UN agencies. Please accept our best wishes and thanks for your attention to this important request. Persian Cultural Center, San Diego, California - USA

U.S. Missteps Led To Shah's Overthrow

Listen Now [4 min 37 sec]

All Things Considered, October 18, 2008 · Scholars who study the Iranian Revolution of 1979 have paid a lot of attention to the internal factors that precipitated revolt. Now, a new study argues that the United States secretly helped create the conditions that led to the overthrow of its ally, the Shah. Andrew Scott Cooper, who wrote the report using previously classified information, talks about the mistakes that led to the demise of the Shah.

Professor AKS Lambton

Persian scholar who produced classic works on Iran and was invaluable in protecting Britain's interests there.

Professor AKS Lambton, who died on July 19 aged 96, held the Chair of Persian at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, from 1953 to 1979; she was a towering figure in her field, unrivalled in the breadth of her knowledge concerning Iran.

She was the author of two classic works – Landlord and Peasant in Persia (1953), about land tenure in Iran, and The Persian Land Reform, 1962-66 (1969) – and her wealth of experience of Iran, which she began to accumulate on her travels there in the mid-1930s, contributed vastly to an understanding of the complex relations within those societies. Her mastery of the history of government in Iran, and in the wider Islamic world, bore fruit in four important works – Theory and Practice in Medieval Persian Government (1980): State and Government in Medieval Islam (1981); Qajar Persia (1987), and Continuity and Change in Medieval Persia (1988) – and she was an editor of The Cambridge History of Islam, volumes 1-11 (1971). Not surprisingly, her expertise, especially her knowledge of the Persian people, was in demand beyond academe, for instance in the aftermath of Iran's nationalisation of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) in 1951, brought about by Iranians' grievances at the risible revenues received by their country. Lambton's insights into the strengths and weaknesses of Iran's then prime minister, Mohammed Mossadegh, proved a valuable aid to Britain's eventual success, in concert with America, in precipitating an end to Mossadegh's premiership and in ensuring a continued, though reduced, British share in Iran's oil production. AIOC became British Petroleum. Her knowledge of the Persian language – to which her Persian Grammar (1953) and Persian Vocabulary (1964) testify – was put at the disposal of the Foreign Office. As press attaché at the British Embassy in Teheran during the war, she impressed the ambassador with her command of the language; and later she taught Farsi to diplomats and armed services personnel destined for Iran and Afghanistan, insisting on a polished form of the language known as ketabi. She was one of a few foreigners with whom Iranians preferred to converse in Persian, and she would invariably deliver her learned papers to Iranian audiences in their own language. Her steely dignity and her knowledge of their country also helped to earn her a special place, and Iranians who knew her held her in high regard. To some, though, she was something of an irritant. She did not hold a high opinion of the last Shah, and drew his attention to what she saw as the shortcomings of his reforms. Bruised by her criticism, and having banned her from Iran for a time, the Shah did not speak to her when he welcomed the British delegation to Iran in 1971 for the celebrations to mark the 2,500th anniversary of Persian monarchy. When her kinsman Lord Lambton, then parliamentary under-secretary at the Ministry of Defence, visited Iran in the 1970s, the Shah told him: "Your cousin has given me more trouble than any of my own subjects." Taken to its conclusion, Professor Lambton considered that Twelver Shi'ism – entailing belief, widespread in Iran, in 12 divinely ordained leaders, or imams – could lead to violent revolution. This view she reached in the 1960s. After the outbreak of revolution in Iran and Khomeini's assumption of power in 1979 she did not return to the country she knew so well. Ann Katharine Swynford Lambton, known as Nancy to family and friends, was born at Newmarket on February 8 1912, the second child of George Lambton, fifth son of the 2nd Earl of Durham, and his wife Cicely, the elder daughter of Sir John Horner, of Mells Park in Somerset. George Lambton had a brilliant career on the Turf. As an amateur jockey he rode Parasang (a parasang is a Persian unit of length) to victory in the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris in 1888. As trainer to Lord Derby at the Bedford Lodge stables at Newmarket, he was British flat racing champion trainer in 1906, 1911 and 1912. He trained two Derby winners, and Swynford, for whom Nancy was named, won the St Leger in 1910. Nancy's mother Cicely was one of the last generation of the Horners to live at Mells, which the family had acquired at the dissolution of Glastonbury Abbey. Mostly given to rural pursuits, the Horner family had none the less produced a Coptic scholar, and was strongly inclined to Evangelical piety. This echoed in Nancy Lambton, a country woman as well as a scholar, and later a deaconess in the Church of England. Nancy grew up at the Newmarket stables, and it was as a result of being laid up after a riding accident there that she was introduced to Persian studies by the Orientalist Sir Denison Ross. She had no formal schooling, but in 1930 enrolled as a non-degree student at London University's School of Oriental Studies (later SOAS), of which Ross was the first director. Subsequently, she registered to read for a degree in Persian, which she obtained in 1935. She also studied Arabic under Professor HAR Gibb, who became perhaps her chief academic mentor. In 1934 she won the Ouseley Memorial Scholarship in Persian and, having visited Iran during the long vacation that year, was awarded an Aga Khan travelling scholarship in 1936-37. She completed the research for her doctoral thesis, concerned with Seljuq institutions in pre-Ottoman Turkey, and staying at Esfahan she also worked at the British Hospital, run by Anglican missionaries. She made friends among the Persians, too, and gained sufficient knowledge of the language to publish her first book, Three Persian Dialects, in 1938. She was awarded her PhD in 1939, and later that year was back in Iran again when the Second World War broke out. Thus it was that she came to be appointed press attaché at the British Legation (Embassy from 1943) in Teheran, to which Sir Reader Bullard was appointed as Minister (later Ambassador) in December 1939. On her return to Britain, Nancy Lambton was appointed senior lecturer in Persian at SOAS, gaining promotion to reader in 1948, and to the Chair in Persian in 1953. On her retirement in 1979 she became Professor Emeritus and an honorary fellow, and continued to take an interest in academic institutions connected to Iran. In particular, she was a staunch friend to the British Institute of Persian Studies (BIPS), being instrumental in the retention of the threatened BIPS library and meeting rooms in Teheran. She received many honours, beginning with an OBE in 1942. She was a Fellow of the British Academy, and an honorary Fellow of New Hall, Cambridge. Nancy Lambton's fearless integrity and general austerity made an impression on all who met her. She could be formidable in her treatment of time-wasters, but was patient with those who were seriously trying to find their way in her field and encouraging to all enthusiasts. She never married, but was always intensely loyal to her family. No one who met her could fail to notice that she possessed striking good looks. Family legend had it that, when she was a young girl in Paris, her beauty caused men in cafés to stand on their chairs and applaud as she passed by. Later, her well-cut tweed coats and skirts made no concessions to changing fashions. Nothing could have been more sensible than her shoes. After horses had ceased to play a leading part in her life, Nancy Lambton became a determined bicyclist, both in London and in the desert wastes of Iran. She also played a strong game of squash and, rather like Gladstone, found working with an axe a good relaxation from intellectual exercise. She felled trees and split logs with skill and gusto. Living in retirement at Kirk Newton, in a small house near her family's estate in north Northumberland, she enjoyed lambing. She was an devout Christian and gave unstinting support to Jerusalem and the Middle East Church Association which sustained a link with the Anglican communities of the Middle East. She served for many years on the JMEC Advisory Council. In the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle she made her mark through a series of Lenten lectures, in addition to playing a part in her home parish church of St Gregory, where she remained faithful to the Book of Common Prayer. The Lambeth Cross of St Augustine was presented to her in 2004 in recognition of her long and distinguished service and commitment to Christianity and the Church of England.

PERSIAN EMPIRE & THE PERSIAN PEOPLE (12 videos)

So you think you know everything about the Romans? They gave us sophisticated road systems, chariots and the modern-day calendar. And of course they had to contend with barbarian hordes who continually threatened the peace, safety and prosperity of their Empire. Didn't they? Terry Jones takes a completely fresh approach to Roman history. Not only does it offer us the chance to see the Romans from a non-Roman perspective, it also reveals that most of the people written off by the Romans as uncivilized, savage and barbaric were in fact organized, motivated and intelligent groups of people, with no intentions of overthrowing Rome and plundering its Empire. This is the true story of Roman history as seen by the Persians.

My homeland has been suffering for nearly 30 long years under the repressive rule of mullah mafia's. Now there is a bright light shining on this land and it's poor people. That freedom light is held aloof by the young Prince Reza Pahlavi, light of the aryans, the hope and the future of Iran.

From: 4711inside

The fight by MUSLIM WOMEN to end their OWN oppression by the Islamic regime in Iran. MUSLIM WOMEN FIGHTING COMPULSION IN RELIGIOUS CLOTHING!Just so you know what the women are doing "wrong" is as follows. They will not wear any version of the Chandor. They buy the biggest sunglasses they can find, and use them to push their hair covering back. And the scarf they wear to begin with is against the rules. They wear light colored clothes.. and its skin tight. They also do things frowned upon but not really punishable in of it's self.. like, wearing too much make-up, using cel/mobile phones in public without an emergency. Being RAIL THIN! Notice how thin the women being harassed are. And how chubby most of the other women are. These women are soldiers in a lipstick army!May they conquer the enemy!

Tahmineh Milani criticizes gender separation policy in Iran.

NEWS NOW _ THE LATEST NEWS ABOUT IRAN

John Bolton, the former American ambassador to the United Nations, has predicted that Israel could attack Iran after the November presidential election but before George W Bush's successor is sworn in. The Arab world would be "pleased" by Israeli strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, he said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph. By Toby Harnden in Washington - >Read the Article

Iran Won't Rule Out U.S. Diplomatic Presence
TEHRAN, Iran -- Tehran would consider any U.S. request to set up a diplomatic presence in Iran, the country's official news agency reported on Tuesday. A Foreign Ministry official quoted by IRNA said "in principle, Iranian officials will consider requests they receive through formal channels."

Fields of Dreams: How Sanctions Hinder Iran's Gas Ambitions
As energy prices surge, the world is wondering where it will all end. Where will supplies come from in the future? Iran, sitting on the world’s second largest reserves of gas – in addition to huge quantities of oil – is tomorrow’s apparent answer.

Israel Prodding U.S. To Attack Iran
Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen leaves Tuesday night on an overseas trip that will take him to Israel, reports CBS News national security correspondent David Martin. The trip has been scheduled for some time but U.S. officials say it comes just as the Israelis are mounting a full court press to get the Bush administration to strike Iran's nuclear complex.

Iran's Rice Farmers ask Where's the Money
CHALUS, Iran -- From the lush paddy fields of northern Iran to the dusty grain bazaars of Tehran, the pain and paradoxes of the global crisis spawned by rising food and fuel prices are starkly on show. Rice prices have more than doubled in Iran since March but farmers working from sunrise to sunset in the rice-growing northern region around Chalus, a city on the Caspian Sea, say little of that money goes into their pockets. more

A Shot in the Dark
Efforts to persuade Iran to freeze its programme of uranium enrichment are entering a dangerous new phase. Viewed from Tehran, the west is playing a classic game of good cop, bad cop. The good cop, the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, tells them that a package of incentives is still on the table if they halt enrichment. The bad cop, Israel, sends 100 fighter planes 870 miles into the eastern Mediterranean (the distance between Israel and Iran's main enrichment plant at Natanz) for an exercise designed to show military readiness for a long-range attack

Are Sanctioned Iranian Banks Actually Sponsoring Anti-Western Terror?
On the Web site of the largest bank in Iran, Bank Melli (also known as the National Bank of Iran), there are no details that could interest intelligence units. After all, what is there to look for in the bank when about a third of its investments are in agriculture and mines, and who even wants to find out how a bank based on the principles of Islam, which forbids charging interest, actually operates. But yesterday, when the sanctions imposed by the European Union against the bank - which has assets of about 38 billion dollars and some 3,300 branches in Iran and abroad - went into effect, it turned out that a great deal of information is apparently missing on the Web site

Rice 'Determined' to Reach Out to People of Iran
With the U.S. and Iran barely on speaking terms for nearly three decades, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice dropped an eyepopping hint Monday that the U.S. is considering a visa office in Iran to draw more Iranian visitors to the United States
Ignore Iran's Exiled Dream Merchants
When they worry about Washington, leading lights in the Iranian government imagine this kind of scene: a room packed with young and impassioned Iranian exiles and a few low-ranking US government officials debating how to prepare Iran's amorphous opposition movement for the day when the regime in Tehran seems weak enough to fall. The assumption at the heart of that debate is not whether Iran's government will collapse, but when and by what means.

Iran Continues to Support Shiites, U.S. Report Says
WASHINGTON -- A new U.S. military report accused Iran of continuing to funnel weapons and money to Shiite militants across Iraq and described Iran as the "greatest long-term threat to Iraqi security."

Britain Removes People's Mujahedeen of Iran From Terror List
LONDON -- British lawmakers formally removed an Iranian opposition group from the U.K.'s list of banned terror groups on Monday, after a seven-year campaign by the organization. Legislators approved the decision of the Court of Appeal, which ruled in May that the People's Mujahedeen of Iran should no longer be listed as a proscribed group.
European Union approves new sanctions against Iran
By CONSTANT BRAND, Associated Press Writer : Mon Jun 23,
BRUSSELS, Belgium - EU nations approved new sanctions against Iran on Monday, imposing additional financial and travel restrictions on a list of Iranian companies and experts — including the country's largest bank. But don't expect the EU, China, Russia or the U.S. to agree anytime soon to tougher sanctions that would ban oil and gas exports from Tehran in response to its nuclear program plans.
Worst of Times for Iran
"Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure 19 pounds 19 shillings and six pence, result happiness. Annual income 20 pounds, annual expenditure 20 pounds and six pence, result misery," said Charles Dickens' Wilkins Micawber in the novel David Copperfield. Households in President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's Iran must suffer on a Dickensian scale, for they spend 10% more than their income, according to the country's central bank. Iran's data are more hilarious than reliable, to be sure, but they illustrate how ordinary Iranians are perishing in a sea of petrodollars.
Sarkozy Says Nuclear Iran Unacceptable
JERUSALEM -- Visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy told the Knesset (parliament) plenum Monday a nuclear Iran is unacceptable and that anyone trying to destroy Israel will find France blocking the way.

Israel's Jets Not Enough
TEL AVIV -- Israel has spent years training for a possible bombing run against Iranian nuclear sites, but its air force may be too small to finish the job alone, officials and independent experts said yesterday. more

Iranians Told to Save Power or Face Daily Blackouts
TEHRAN -- Iranians on Saturday were told to cut their electricity consumption by 10 percent or face daily power cuts because of a severe drought and low production at hydroelectric power plants

Iran on Its Heels
For the first time since 2003, Iran has stumbled in Iraq. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's decision to confront Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army in Basra and Sadr City last month caught Tehran off guard. The Mahdi Army lost more than face: It surrendered large caches of arms, and many of its leaders fled or were killed or captured.

While the American presidential primaries have aroused much interest in Iran, the meteoric rise of Illinois senator Barak Obama has particularly focused the attention of Iranians. The color of his skin, his middle name—Hussein—and the fact that he had attended a Muslim school in Indonesia significantly contributed to the interest raised by the presumptive democratic party candidate for president.

Persian Rugs

4.5 million dollar Persian rug

06.21.08 Comment?

The Persian Rug that sold for 4.45 million dollars
The rug that sold for 4 and a half million dollars.

In what was reputedly the biggest sale in Oriental and Persian rug history, Christie’s Auction house in New York sold a four-hundred-year-old silk Persian Isfahan carpet for a cool $4,450,500 earlier this month. The rug is 5′7″ by 7′7″ and is believed to have been made circa 1600. The Persian art historian Arthur Pope has written about this particular piece. “Nothing further in the way of refinement, imagination, perfection of technique, or infinite charm of color was produced in this period,” he says, referring to the reign of Shah Abbas (1587-1629) of the Safavid dynasty. The fact that the rug’s previous owner was Doris Duke might also have added to the stratospheric selling price. The price comes out to about $105,000 per square foot.
