U.S. Arrests 13 with Iranian Links in Iraq : August 13, 2007
BAGHDAD -- The U.S. Army announced Monday the arrests of 13 militants with links to Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps in Baghdad's Shiite Sadr City area. Those detained are suspected of facilitating the transport of weapons and personnel from Iran into Iraq," a military statement said of the Sunday arrests. "They are also believed to have facilitated the transport of deadly explosively formed projectiles from Iran into Iraq to be used against coalition forces." he incident began when a small truck refused U.S. orders to stop, Kuwait's KUNA news agency reported. Troops opened fire and an aircraft also attacked the truck. As many as five people the Army described as likely terrorists were killed, the military said. Troops seized a computer hard-drive, documents and photographs from the truck as well, the report said. Iran has denied any official involvement in supplying training or weaponry to Iraqi Shiites or Sunni Muslims, but the U.S. military says many confiscated weapons have Iranian origins.
