A judge in Trinidad refused bail for an imam accused in the Kennedy International Airport bomb plot after hearing evidence he tried to get Iranian help. The judge also said in a written decision Kareem Ibrahim might have sought help from British Muslims, the New York Sun reported. Ibrahim, in tape recorded conversations, refers to an "Iranian brother" he expected to visit Trinidad and Tobago and talks of sending a "trusted brother" to Iran, Judge Prakash Moosai said.Ibrahim was one of four people arrested who were allegedly planning to blow up fuel tanks at Kennedy International Airport in New York. Another defendant, Abdul Kadir of Guyana, was allegedly planning to attend a conference in Iran at the time of his arrest. The alleged ringleader of the plot, Russell DeFreitas, a former employee at the airport who lives in the borough of Brooklyn in New York, was scheduled to appear in federal court on Wednesday.
Ibrahim, a Shiite imam, had not been outside of Trinidad for many years.
