Iran foils spy networks in west of country(Reuters)9 July 2007

TEHERAN - Iran has broken up spy networks and detained 20 people, an intelligence official was quoted as saying on Monday, speaking from a region in the west of the country where Teheran has said U.S.-backed groups operate. The head of intelligence in Kermanshah, a province next to the border with Iraq, said ‘five spying networks in this province have been found and destroyed’, the official IRNA news agency reported. The official, named only as Karimi, said 20 individuals had been detained and were under investigation. ‘In the interests of security and intelligence, for the time being, we cannot reveal (their identities),’ he said.
He said those involved, including ‘foreign elements’, had been persuaded by enemy intelligence services to operate against economic, military, political, cultural and social targets. He did not give further details.Iran has previously accused the United States, its arch foe, of operating in the region in a bid to destabilise the Islamic Republic. Washington severed ties with Teheran in 1980 after radical students took Americans hostage at the US embassy.Iran detained three U.S.-Iranian citizens in May on security-related charges, a move some analysts linked to the arrest of five Iranians by US forces in Iraq in January. Teheran denies any link.Iranian officials accuse Washington of backing a so-called ‘soft revolution’ that involves using intellectuals and others in the country to try to undermine the ruling system.Iran has also accused Britain, which also has forces in neighbouring Iraq, of trying to foment unrest in southwest Iran.

13 Petrol smagglers killed in road accident in Iran(AP)8 July 2007

TEHERAN, Iran -At least 13 people were killed in a road accident after four fuel-smuggling trucks crashed into each other in southeastern Iran, state television reported Sunday. The report said the accident happened when the four trucks, which were carrying a total of 17 people and thousands of litters of fuel, were traveling on the road with their headlights turned off to avoid detection by police. The trucks crashed and caught fire on the road, which links Zahedan to Mirjaveh near the Pakistan border about 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) southeast of Teheran, the report said. The four other people inside the trucks were taken to a local hospital with severe injuries.Fuel smuggling from Iran to neighboring countries is common because the country has one of the lowest fuel prices in the region, 38 cents per gallon.Iran also has one of the worst records for road accidents in the world, with about 26,000 people dying annually. The toll is blamed on unsafe vehicles, disregard for traffic rules and inadequate emergency services.
