BAGHDAD, May 26 (KUNA) -- US and Iraqi troops arrested an insurgent suspected of involving in smuggling of weapons and fighters into the country on Saturday, in the second such blow to the anti-state gunmen in two days. The army said in a statement that the troops stormed a hideout in the Baghdad suburban region, Al-Sadr City, and nabbed the chief of the terrorist network who had been involved in smuggling arms, armor piercing explosives and fighters from Iran into the country. It said the detainee had links with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. On Friday, the army reported an identical operation that resultd in the detention of an insurgent involved in similar acts.
U.S. air strike kills five suspected insurgents in Baghdad's Shiite bastion
U.S. and Iraqi forces backed by aircraft on Saturday raided Baghdad's eastern neighborhood of Sadr City, killing five suspected insurgents and detaining a militant leader suspected of ties to Iran's Revolutionary Guards, the U.S. military said. The detained leader is believed to be running a "secret sell terrorist network known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, from Iran to Iraq, as well as bringing militants from Iraq to Iran for terrorist training," a military statement said. After the detaining, nine vehicles moved to block and ambush the U.S. and Iraqi troops as they began to depart the targeted area, prompting the troops to call in close air support, the statement said. The air strike destroyed all the nine vehicles and killed at least five suspects in the neighborhood which is a stronghold of Mahdi Army militia loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, it added. According to intelligence reports, the military said that the leader was also "acting as a proxy for Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps officer." The incident came a day after reappearance of the 33-years-old cleric Moqtada al-Sadr for the first time after months of keeping low profile since the start of U.S. and Iraqi security crackdown in Feb. 14. The U.S. military frequently accused Iran of providing Iraqi Shiite militia with weapons and parts for sophisticated armored- piercing bombs, which has been denied by Iran. U.S. and Iraqi security forces have staged a security plan in the capital since Feb. 14 with an aim of putting rampant violence under control.
