Conclusion
Iran’s workforce is the backbone of the Islamic republic; it can be either a force for stability or a threat to security. The economic policies of the current administration have pushed it to the latter. Despite campaign promises to increase the wealth and livelihood of average Iranians, Ahmadinejad’s economic restructuring and shift to short-term projects have had the opposite effect. As a result, the president has lost popularity and the public has grown distraught over instability and is fearful of the government’s next move. Moreover, workers have no avenue to express their dissent. When groups protest or speak out against injustice, they are summarily put down by government forces. The lack of peaceful options for change has created a dangerous situation for the regime. The very people that the Islamic Republic swore to protect are disillusioned and resentful. If nothing is done soon, this may be the greatest threat to the country’s survival.
